Majority of foreign prisoners in Ghana are Nigerians - Nigeria ambassador to Ghana
Nigeria's High Commissioner to Ghana, Ambassador Ademola Oluseyi Onafowokan has raised an alarm over the increasing number of Nigerians serving jail terms in Ghana, describing the increasing number of Nigerians in foreign prison all over the world as a National disgrace.
"Firstly, I agree with you that majority of them are Nigerians, but should majority of them be Nigerians? We shouldn’t even be saying such things with pride because it is a national disgrace. Every country we go, they are filled with Nigerians, why? It is unfortunate. But I believe if you are ready to take the risk, then you must be ready to dance to the music.Now to the question of helping with infrastructure and other things; Nigeria High Commission doesn’t have the kind of money to build prisons. We are just here to do our core duties such as issuing passports, visa, supporting Nigerians in distress and to keep promoting the diplomatic relationship between the two brotherly nations" Ambassador Onafowokan told Tribune
I have never dated Jim Iyke but...Yvonne Nelson reveals
just a gossip oooo. Jim is now seeing fellow Gallywood actress, Nadia Buari. I asked Yvonne if she was not treading on dangerous path if indeed she had ever dated Jim Iyke.
Smiling, Yvonne told me “I am not dating Jim Iyke – and that’s the truth, but I want to confess that we have very close relationship. We have great chemistry together – call it some form of magic between us, especially when we act together.
He is a hot guy and I like him a lot. We are always together when he comes to Ghana to act in movies, I drive him around. When I am in Nigeria, he does the same for me. But does that mean that we are dating? The answer is no. We are great friends – the manner I am with Majid Michel, John Dumelo – these are great and hot friends of mine as well. Does it mean that I must date ever person that I have an on-screen chemistry with?
People should learn to be less judgmental. There is nothing wrong about having a friendship with a co-star and not talking it to the physical level.”
Given that the reason she was alleged to be a lesbian was because she had not been regularly seen with boyfriend, I asked Yvonne if she was currently dating. “I am not dating now –conventionally speaking – but I wouldn’t say that I am desperate for a relationship at the same time.
People have asked me if I don’t think I should be considering settling down, and I tell them that I appreciate their concerns but that I am still very young. I don’t have to rush to get married because everyone is doing so. When the time comes, I will get married. This may surprise you: I am a simple girl – very easy to date. If I go out with a date, it doesn’t cost the man money. I don’t order expensive champagne, I don’t order exotic meals. My drink of choice is orange juice.
Most women would say they are looking for a chiseled man –those with perfect six-packed abs – well, good luck to them. I am not interested in macho men. I am more interested with the substance-the values and the humanity the man brings to the table than with his physical or material possessions. I work hard, so I don’t expect my man to have to slave to satisfy me. I am sure this may surprise you, because any one who looks at me – analyses the roles I play – may incorrectly define me according to those roles. That is the exact opposite of what and who I am – so when the time is right for me to get married, God will bring that guy to me. “
‘No problem with Jackie’
Some years ago, it was widely reported that Yvonne was banned from Gallywood and Nollywood for one year due to her alleged rift and diva attitude toward fellow Ghanaian actress – Jackie Appiah –an actress she is said to be engaged in a fight of supremacy with. I asked Yvonne what was the status of her relationship with Jackie. In a body language that showed she was weary of being thought to entertain animosity towards Jackie, she said: “I don’t have problems with Jackie Appiah at least any that I know of. The industry is large and big enough to accommodate everyone, so the notion that I am in some form of competition with her to determine who is a better actress is ludicrous.”
“But according to published report, you were said to have been banned because you wanted same treatment given to Jackie Appiah on set to be accorded you, and when that didn’t happen, you were said to have stormed offset, leading to your being banned for conduct not befitting a top actress”, I pointedly told Yvonne. “First of all, let me set the record straight – no one banned me. I was not banned, period. I was working throughout the period they claimed I was banned. Concerning my request to be accorded same treatment as Jackie Appiah, that again is misleading and untrue.
I think I have worked hard enough and established enough bonafides to have certain things I need in the industry without having to make an issue out of those demands. I don’t know if some of these rumors emanated from camps that wanted to amplify a non-existent hostility and rivalry between Jackie and I.
I was in the university for four years and was acting at the same time. Most times, there were conflicts between my lectures and time I was supposed to be on set and I would make some demands and, most times, things didn’t go so well on set and, because I wasn’t going to compromise my studies, I tried as much as possible to manage the two competing demands. Sometimes, I had to make choices that may not have been pleasant with certain actors and producers. I want to say that I have no regrets for pursuing my education, at the same time, giving my best to the industry. It has made me a better actress – and one with a better inquiring mind”.
Banku coaches Ayitey Powers to become the new West Africa Light Heavyweight Champion
Michael Okine better known as Ayitey Powers is the new West Africa Light Heavyweight champion after stopping Benin's Anicet Amoussou in their headline fight of Landmark Promotions bill at Unity Park, Trantra Hill near Achimota in Accra last Saturday night.
Powers who surprisingly came into the ring led by age-long rival, Bukom Banku (Braimah Kamoko) dominated the fight before knocking out Amoussou in round 5 of their scheduled 10-rounder for the West Africa Boxing Union (WABU) title.
It was a first victory for Powers since he defeated Musah Abubakari in Accra on June 1, 2012, a stretch that saw him lose all seven fights during the span, four of them in Australia as well as another against reigning Commonwealth Super Middleweight champion, Isaac Ekpo in Benin.
Last Saturday's fight was however a victorious one as Powers powered to the West Africa title under the tutelage of buddy Bukom Banku, the same man to whom Powers lost his last fight, a sellout in Accra on May 15 last year.
"Bukom Banku trained me for this fight and he was a very good coach this evening and I thank him for his support which was important for my victory this evening," an elated Powers told Allsports.com.gh exclusively.
"I thank God for such a good start to the year and I am looking forward to more fights in 2015 because I still want to go for the world title. I thank my fans for their support, they should keep on praying for me and I will bring the world title," he added.
In other fights on the Landmark Promotions and Management bill codenamed 'Return of the Dragon,' Emmanuel Omari Danso AKA Kwahu Tyson stopped Bassil Osigwe of Nigeria after only 78 seconds of their Light Heavyweight contest.
World title chasing Kwahu Tyson proved too strong for Osigwe who failed to beat the referees' count at just one minute, 18 seconds of the very first round.
Also victorious on Saturday night was Habib Ahmed who scored a unanimous points victory over Atooli Moore in a Super Middleweight contest, whilst Success Tetteh successfully saw off the challenge of Alfred Quaye in their bantamweight clash.
An 8-round international Super Bantamweight contest between young but brave Isaac Sackey of Ghana and Fatiou Fassinou of Benin was scored a majority draw, same as a Lightweight contest featuring Ben Lamptey versus Justin Savi of Benin which also ended a draw.

One Direction singer Harry Styles made a shocking sexual comment on band mate Niall Horan's instagram photo that sent their fans into meltdown on social media. Niall posted this selfie with his tongue out on his instagram page and Harry posted a jaw dropping sexual comment under the photo. Harry wrote "Can I sit on your face?" then added "Please?".
Fans had to wonder if the 20 year old had been hacked or if it was a fake account...but Harry wasn't hacked and it's his real account. He was just being naughty. 1D fans have been talking about it all day
i have a snake in my leg – Super OD
The actor, who is well respected in Ghana’s movie industry for his talent, made the revelation in another attempt to respond to earlier rumours that he was dead. However, he didn’t reveal the identity of the pastor in question.
According to him, he was doing well and not sick as speculated by the death reports. He is only battling with old age.
“I am not sick; it’s just my knee that hurts. I went to a pastor and he told me there was a snake in my leg and said I should give him an amount of GH¢200 to get the snake out of my leg.
“I went to borrow the Ghc200 but I used Ghc100 for other things and still the snake is in my leg. A character like that is the reason why we don’t believe people. For me, I think it is old age. I’m grown now. I voted for Kwame Nkrumah so I’m grown now,” OD said.
He was speaking on Ghana Movie Awards stage on December 30, 2014 when he and other veteran actors were invited on stage to be celebrated on the night of the awards.
The veterans who were on stage that night will each receive medical treatment worth Ghc10, 000 at the Holy Trinity Spa and Health Farm.
OD also lamented the neglect of veteran actors by film producers.
“The filmmakers, I don’t know why they don’t come for us. If you look at Nigeria, elderly roles are played by elderly people. But here in Ghana it’s not like that. They pick young ones to depict elderly roles. I want to tell them that we are still around. We are not expensive. If it’s fear that we are expensive, we will be reasonable to reduce our fees for you,” OD added.
