This is What's Killing More People in Nigeria Than Boko Haram? Lack of Drinking Water

The lack of running water killed more people in Nigeria last year than Boko Haram.
While the terror campaign claimed more than 4,000 lives, the shortage of potable water and poor sanitation led to about 73,000 deaths, according to WaterAid, a London-based nonprofit.
The water deficit isn’t limited to isolated areas in the country’s vast north. In Lagos, about 15 million of the coastal metropolis’ 21 million have limited access to piped water.
Africa’s accelerating urbanization is colliding with governments’ failure to provide the most basic services. Next year alone, Lagos will add more than the population of Boston, worsening its infrastructure shortfall.
“Water is strained, transportation is strained, housing is strained,”Toyin Ayinde, the state commissioner for planning and urban development, said in an interview.
Folks still need about 25 gallons a day, the state-run Lagos Water Corp. reckons.
That’s where Mohamed Adamu comes in. Starting at 5 a.m. every day, he fills 10 jerry cans and walks down rutted streets to deliver clean water to corrugated iron-roofed homes in the Otumara district about a half-hour walk away. Vendors like him are known as “mairuwa” -- or “water owner” in the Hausa language.
“This is just something to do until you get a better business,” said Adamu, 36, who migrated two years ago from northwestern Kebbi state, some 530 miles away. “It’s the type of work you can’t do for long because it’s hard on the body.”
Flight to Lagos
Thousands like him have fled northern Nigeria to escape both the rural poverty there and the Islamist insurgency in Africa’s largest economy. The government says Boko Haram has killed more than 13,000 people since 2009. They killed at least 4,740 last year, more than double the number in 2013, Bath, U.K.-based risk consultancy Verisk Maplecroft estimates.
Just yesterday, at least 65 people were killed in the northeastern city of Maiduguri during a Boko Haram assault on the capital of Borno state, according to a local militia member.
“Everybody is worried about Boko Haram but the average Nigerian continues to see water as a private good not a public good that has to be provided by the government,” said Idayat Hassan, director of the Centre for Democracy and Development, a research institute based in the capital, Abuja.
The water company’s capacity is 210 million gallons a day compared with the 540 million gallons needed by Lagosians. Its potable piped water reaches about 7 million people. That leaves two-thirds of the city struggling to find safe water.
“Mairuwa are one of the most common forms of informal water supply,” said Oluseyi Abdulmalik, a communications manager at WaterAid Nigeria. “They’re filling the gap of what government’s utilities should be doing.”
Meeting Demand
Lagos water officials have developed a $3.5 billion plan to more than triple capacity to 745 million gallons a day by 2020 to meet a projected population of 29 million, according to Shayo Holloway, the company’s group managing director.
The third-biggest killer of children under the age of 5 in Africa is diarrhea, a disease that can -- in nine out of 10 cases -- be prevented by access to safe water and sanitation, according to WaterAid. Nigeria accounts for 11 percent of all global under-5 deaths, according Unicef.
Nigeria isn’t the only sub-Saharan African country struggling with shortages; 325 million people on the continent didn’t have access to improved drinking water in 2012, according to a World Health Organization and Unicef joint report last year. Dakar, Accra, Abidjan and Nairobi were cited as other water-stressed cities reported Bloomberg news.

ISIS Sharia law executions show medieval brutality: Thrown from a roof, stoned to death and crucified
This is not a Hollywood movie ooo! real happenings. ISIS have released photographic evidence of a series of horrific executions which includes throwing people from tall buildings, stoning people to death, tying them to makeshift metal crosses & shooting them to death. Full report from UK Daily Mail below...
Two men were hurled from the top of a tower block, two more were crucified in front of a baying crowd and a woman was stoned to death in the latest series of horrific executions by ISIS.
The men were thrown from the roof down to the crowd below in the brutal punishment for being gay.
The men had their charges announced by a masked Islamic State fighter, using a small handheld radio, before they were thrown from the roof

Charges found against the accused were announced by a masked Islamic State fighter, using a small handheld radio. Reading from a list, he declares the men are guilty of engaging in homosexual activities and should be punished by death, in accordance with Islamic State’s radical interpretation of Sharia law.

Down on the ground, two men accused of banditry have been tied to makeshift metal crosses.
Strung up tightly with yellow and green ribbon around their wrists, the men were hanged from the crosses, wincing in agony’
They had been tied up and transported in the back of a white pickup truck to the public execution sight in the Iraqi city of Mosul.
Both prisoners are shown wearing casual clothing rather than the standard orange jumpsuit, commonly worn by many Islamic State prisoners in recent many high profile execution videos.
Two masked IS fighters, dressed in khaki military fatigues are photographed standing behind the two crucified men. Upon drawing their pistols, the fighters shoot the two alleged bandits in cold blood. Their motionless bodies remain tied to the metal crosses to the delight of the all male crowd.
It is not the first time Islamic State have released photographic evidence of the horrific execution of homosexuals in Iraq. In December 2014, photos emerged on social media showing a man, accused of being homosexual, being thrown to his death from a rooftop by eight IS fighters.
The horrific punishment was reportedly carried out in the Iraqi province of al-Furat. The victim’s broken body is photographed on the dirty road, lying outside the steps of the orange patterned building. Two other men were also crucified for alleged rape crimes. Their bodies are shown lying tied up to the railings of a nearby fence.
Standing nearby is Abu Omar al-Ansari, an elderly Islamic State fighter, with a thick beard of white facial hair. Al-Ansari rose to fame as a propaganda figure, appearing in a video entitled ‘Message of the Mujahid’, in which he urges other Iraqis to join Islamic State.
Al-Ansari, who appears shabbily dressed in a black robe and a pair of combat boots, is shown shown reading out the crimes against a woman, accused of adultery. The woman is dressed in a full black burqa.
The final two photos show the burqa clad woman being stoned to death by a horde of Islamic State militants, hurling large rocks at the woman.
Lying on the ground surrounded by a pile of rocks, her bright red socks are still visible. An old piece of blue tarpaulin was then used to cover the dead woman’s body as the militants disperse from the horrific scene.
It appears the stoning was not carried out at the public execution site like the city’s main square. Instead, she appears to have been stoned in a quieter residential area, away from the baying crowd.

What a Shock! Nollywood star Muna Obiekwe has died at age 36
Unbelievable yet true! Actor Muna Obiekwe has died. He died this afternoon around 4:15pm in a hospital in Lagos after a battle with kidney failure. He was rushed to the hospital today after he collapsed at his home. Muna has been quietly battling this kidney disease but kept it hush hush from friends and colleagues. So Sad! A colleague said for over two weeks before he died didn't go for his dialysis.
Muna needed money for his health problems but instead of going public to raise money, he told friends he was planning a stage play to raise money but died before he could do it. Unbelievably sad!
Meanwhile, there's some twitter handle called @MunaObiekwe that's denying his death. That is not Muna! Unfortunately the real one is gone. Unbelievable! RIP to a great actor!

A wall street office Intern posts nude selfies from office bathroom, then quits job to pursue career in porn
Paige A. Jennings, who moonlights as "Veronica Vain," quit her internship with Lazard Asset Management this month to pursue a career in the adult-film industry.
"I just left a job on Wall Street for a porn career because I can't stop masturbating at work ... " Jennings' Twitter bio (@TheVeronicaVain) says [NSFW].
Jennings worked as a part-time intern in Lazard's alternative-investments marketing group in New York. She was with Lazard from June 2, 2014, until Jan. 9, 2015, Business Insider has learned.
On Twitter, Jennings said that she "quit [Wall Street] before it fired me."
NewsCult first reported that Jennings had posted nude selfies from inside the bathroom of Lazard's offices on her Twitter account. Those selfies were taken down from Jennings' Twitter, but screenshots of them still exist on NewsCult's site [again, NSFW].
In an interview with BroBible, Jennings said that she didn't expect her coworkers to find the photos since they weren't actually attached to her real name.
"I had already put in my two weeks’ notice and was sticking around to tie up some loose ends," she said. "My boss’s boss called me over the phone with an HR lady. I had a pretty good reputation intellectually, and this executive was aware of that. However, he obviously couldn’t have me coming back to the office when likely just about everyone had seen me half naked online," she told BroBible.
Naturally, that wouldn't bode well on Wall Street.
Jennings also told BroBible that she hopes to make her debut in the adult-film industry on "The Sex Factor," a reality porn-competition show. She said that she's been called back for a final casting. She also said she's been talking to agents in the industry.
She previously worked as a stripper, but didn't see it as "a viable career path." One day she said she might want to start an "adult-industry-centered venture-capital fund."

Majority of foreign prisoners in Ghana are Nigerians - Nigeria ambassador to Ghana
Nigeria's High Commissioner to Ghana, Ambassador Ademola Oluseyi Onafowokan has raised an alarm over the increasing number of Nigerians serving jail terms in Ghana, describing the increasing number of Nigerians in foreign prison all over the world as a National disgrace.
"Firstly, I agree with you that majority of them are Nigerians, but should majority of them be Nigerians? We shouldn’t even be saying such things with pride because it is a national disgrace. Every country we go, they are filled with Nigerians, why? It is unfortunate. But I believe if you are ready to take the risk, then you must be ready to dance to the music. Now to the question of helping with infrastructure and other things; Nigeria High Commission doesn’t have the kind of money to build prisons. We are just here to do our core duties such as issuing passports, visa, supporting Nigerians in distress and to keep promoting the diplomatic relationship between the two brotherly nations" Ambassador Onafowokan told Tribune
I have never dated Jim Iyke but...Yvonne Nelson reveals
just a gossip oooo. Jim is now seeing fellow Gallywood actress, Nadia Buari. I asked Yvonne if she was not treading on dangerous path if indeed she had ever dated Jim Iyke.
Smiling, Yvonne told me “I am not dating Jim Iyke – and that’s the truth, but I want to confess that we have very close relationship. We have great chemistry together – call it some form of magic between us, especially when we act together.
He is a hot guy and I like him a lot. We are always together when he comes to Ghana to act in movies, I drive him around. When I am in Nigeria, he does the same for me. But does that mean that we are dating? The answer is no. We are great friends – the manner I am with Majid Michel, John Dumelo – these are great and hot friends of mine as well. Does it mean that I must date ever person that I have an on-screen chemistry with?
People should learn to be less judgmental. There is nothing wrong about having a friendship with a co-star and not talking it to the physical level.”
Given that the reason she was alleged to be a lesbian was because she had not been regularly seen with boyfriend, I asked Yvonne if she was currently dating. “I am not dating now –conventionally speaking – but I wouldn’t say that I am desperate for a relationship at the same time.
People have asked me if I don’t think I should be considering settling down, and I tell them that I appreciate their concerns but that I am still very young. I don’t have to rush to get married because everyone is doing so. When the time comes, I will get married. This may surprise you: I am a simple girl – very easy to date. If I go out with a date, it doesn’t cost the man money. I don’t order expensive champagne, I don’t order exotic meals. My drink of choice is orange juice.
Most women would say they are looking for a chiseled man –those with perfect six-packed abs – well, good luck to them. I am not interested in macho men. I am more interested with the substance-the values and the humanity the man brings to the table than with his physical or material possessions. I work hard, so I don’t expect my man to have to slave to satisfy me. I am sure this may surprise you, because any one who looks at me – analyses the roles I play – may incorrectly define me according to those roles. That is the exact opposite of what and who I am – so when the time is right for me to get married, God will bring that guy to me. “
‘No problem with Jackie’
Some years ago, it was widely reported that Yvonne was banned from Gallywood and Nollywood for one year due to her alleged rift and diva attitude toward fellow Ghanaian actress – Jackie Appiah –an actress she is said to be engaged in a fight of supremacy with. I asked Yvonne what was the status of her relationship with Jackie. In a body language that showed she was weary of being thought to entertain animosity towards Jackie, she said: “I don’t have problems with Jackie Appiah at least any that I know of. The industry is large and big enough to accommodate everyone, so the notion that I am in some form of competition with her to determine who is a better actress is ludicrous.”
“But according to published report, you were said to have been banned because you wanted same treatment given to Jackie Appiah on set to be accorded you, and when that didn’t happen, you were said to have stormed offset, leading to your being banned for conduct not befitting a top actress”, I pointedly told Yvonne. “First of all, let me set the record straight – no one banned me. I was not banned, period. I was working throughout the period they claimed I was banned. Concerning my request to be accorded same treatment as Jackie Appiah, that again is misleading and untrue.
I think I have worked hard enough and established enough bonafides to have certain things I need in the industry without having to make an issue out of those demands. I don’t know if some of these rumors emanated from camps that wanted to amplify a non-existent hostility and rivalry between Jackie and I.
I was in the university for four years and was acting at the same time. Most times, there were conflicts between my lectures and time I was supposed to be on set and I would make some demands and, most times, things didn’t go so well on set and, because I wasn’t going to compromise my studies, I tried as much as possible to manage the two competing demands. Sometimes, I had to make choices that may not have been pleasant with certain actors and producers. I want to say that I have no regrets for pursuing my education, at the same time, giving my best to the industry. It has made me a better actress – and one with a better inquiring mind”.
Banku coaches Ayitey Powers to become the new West Africa Light Heavyweight Champion
Michael Okine better known as Ayitey Powers is the new West Africa Light Heavyweight champion after stopping Benin's Anicet Amoussou in their headline fight of Landmark Promotions bill at Unity Park, Trantra Hill near Achimota in Accra last Saturday night.
Powers who surprisingly came into the ring led by age-long rival, Bukom Banku (Braimah Kamoko) dominated the fight before knocking out Amoussou in round 5 of their scheduled 10-rounder for the West Africa Boxing Union (WABU) title.
It was a first victory for Powers since he defeated Musah Abubakari in Accra on June 1, 2012, a stretch that saw him lose all seven fights during the span, four of them in Australia as well as another against reigning Commonwealth Super Middleweight champion, Isaac Ekpo in Benin.
Last Saturday's fight was however a victorious one as Powers powered to the West Africa title under the tutelage of buddy Bukom Banku, the same man to whom Powers lost his last fight, a sellout in Accra on May 15 last year.
"Bukom Banku trained me for this fight and he was a very good coach this evening and I thank him for his support which was important for my victory this evening," an elated Powers told Allsports.com.gh exclusively.
"I thank God for such a good start to the year and I am looking forward to more fights in 2015 because I still want to go for the world title. I thank my fans for their support, they should keep on praying for me and I will bring the world title," he added.
In other fights on the Landmark Promotions and Management bill codenamed 'Return of the Dragon,' Emmanuel Omari Danso AKA Kwahu Tyson stopped Bassil Osigwe of Nigeria after only 78 seconds of their Light Heavyweight contest.
World title chasing Kwahu Tyson proved too strong for Osigwe who failed to beat the referees' count at just one minute, 18 seconds of the very first round.
Also victorious on Saturday night was Habib Ahmed who scored a unanimous points victory over Atooli Moore in a Super Middleweight contest, whilst Success Tetteh successfully saw off the challenge of Alfred Quaye in their bantamweight clash.
An 8-round international Super Bantamweight contest between young but brave Isaac Sackey of Ghana and Fatiou Fassinou of Benin was scored a majority draw, same as a Lightweight contest featuring Ben Lamptey versus Justin Savi of Benin which also ended a draw.

i have a snake in my leg – Super OD
Veteran Ghanaian actor Super OD has said that a Ghanaian pastor once told him that he had a snake in his leg.
The actor, who is well respected in Ghana’s movie industry for his talent, made the revelation in another attempt to respond to earlier rumours that he was dead. However, he didn’t reveal the identity of the pastor in question.
According to him, he was doing well and not sick as speculated by the death reports. He is only battling with old age.
“I am not sick; it’s just my knee that hurts. I went to a pastor and he told me there was a snake in my leg and said I should give him an amount of GH¢200 to get the snake out of my leg.
“I went to borrow the Ghc200 but I used Ghc100 for other things and still the snake is in my leg. A character like that is the reason why we don’t believe people. For me, I think it is old age. I’m grown now. I voted for Kwame Nkrumah so I’m grown now,” OD said.
He was speaking on Ghana Movie Awards stage on December 30, 2014 when he and other veteran actors were invited on stage to be celebrated on the night of the awards.
The veterans who were on stage that night will each receive medical treatment worth Ghc10, 000 at the Holy Trinity Spa and Health Farm.
OD also lamented the neglect of veteran actors by film producers.
“The filmmakers, I don’t know why they don’t come for us. If you look at Nigeria, elderly roles are played by elderly people. But here in Ghana it’s not like that. They pick young ones to depict elderly roles. I want to tell them that we are still around. We are not expensive. If it’s fear that we are expensive, we will be reasonable to reduce our fees for you,” OD added.
